Loyalist day parade photos group 1.

Loyalist Days were part of Kingston Peninsula History for many years.

The school kids, the Kingston Young Peoples, and all the people of Kingston took part, enjoying the King and Queen Contest, the parade, the dinners, the displays and games, both old and new. Many took snapshots which are included here. Old pictures of Hill House, of the village and of the Peninsula are interesting reminders of the Glory Days of Kingston.

Kingston Glory Days continued in the 1960's. See Loyalist Days 2 and More loyalist Days, 1960's.

Loyalist Days began in Kingston as a June celebration of the coming of the Loyalists to Kingston, NB, in 1783. Here they carved a vibrant community out of the wilderness, a community that continues today in the friendly and solid tradition of the descendants of the first Loyalist families. Together with others who have moved to the community in past and in present years, the loyal descendants began a celebration in the late 1950's and 1960's that featured a big parade with floats, bands, horses , people, characters, vehicles, wagons and all sorts of funny, historical and unique entries. There was a doll carriage and bicycle parade, king and queen contest, pageant and dance, school and church displays, horse show, fair grounds, contests of skills like log sawing and tug-of-war, dinners, demonstrations and on and on. Church services and sit down community dinners were front and center. Crowds flooded in to partake of the fun and local cadets did traffic control.

All of this was organized by a few active citizens, At first a few school teachers, a young peoples group and volunteers who wore many hats and pulled it all together without any " Budget". The celebration grew to include outdoor concerts. Ryan's Fancy entertained at Gorham's farm one year.

Sadly, the events came to a close from volunteer fatigue, but I maintain hope that some of us may begin the grand events again.
